It was an interesting week in the KBO last week and it might be even more interesting this week. The Kiwoom Heroes have been dominant as of late, winning 10 of their last 11 games while the LG Twins finally snapped a seven-game losing streak and won two games over the weekend. Here’s what you can expect for Tuesday’s match-ups in the KBO.

KT Wiz vs. LG Twins

Tuesday, June 30, 2020 – 5:30am EST

Probable Pitchers Per MyKBO Website:

  • KT: Kim Min-soo (1-2 6.41 ERA)
  • LG: Lee Min-ho (2-2 1.59 ERA)

The LG Twins snapped their seven-game losing streak with two wins over the SK Wyverns over the weekend. The LG Twins pitching staff put up back-to-back zeros against the Wyverns and will look to do the same against KT.

The Twins will send out Lee Min-ho who is an 18-year-old rookie with a 1.59 ERA in six games and four games started this season. He lost his last outing against the Doosan Bears at home, giving up two runs in five innings on 110 pitches. He struck out five and walked four while also hitting two batters.

He’s now hit a batter in his last three games and has had a couple of nights where his command has been a bit off. In those six games, he has only faced three separate teams.

Min-ho faced Doosan three times this season with one start and two relief appearances. He’s also seen Samsung and SK and has wins against both of those teams. He also took a loss against Samsung after going seven innings and allowing two runs.

In his four starts this season, he’s allowed five runs in four starts (24.1 IP). He had arguably the worst start of the season against Doosan and still shut Doosan down to two runs in five innings with the Bears on the road. That’s a tough task and he did well enough to keep his team in the game.

Min-ho hasn’t allowed a single homer this season and has a respectable 3.57 FIP in his first season in the KBO.

The Tigers are still without three massive bats in their lineup but still feature a struggling Roberto Ramos who might get going on Tuesday.

Kim Min-soo will take the mound for the KT Wiz. He’s 1-2 with a 6.41 ERA on the season. Although his stats look bad, Min-soo has been much better as of late. He’s 1-0 in his last three starts and has allowed just five earned runs (seven runs) total in those three games against Kia, SK, and NC.

Kbo Betting Picks

While Min-soo has had high strike out numbers in the past but he’s only struck out three batters in his last two games. Min-soo will start his fifth game of the season after nine games in relief to start the season. He was clobbered against LG when pitching in relief earlier this season.

He allowed four runs in .2 innings of work and was only able to finish .1 innings in each outing vs. LG on the road.

While his EA is 6.41, his FIP isn’t nearly as bad at 4.56. That’s about where his FIP has been throughout his career. He’s getting hit hard and allowing a .408 batting average of balls in play so far this season along with a homer per nine innings.

Prediction

The LG Twins don’t have much offense but they’ll have enough to come out on top in this one. Roberto Ramos should come out of his slump against Min-soo who has struggled against lefties this season. That’s why we are taking the LG Twins’ odds at BetOnline.

Hanwha Eagles vs. Kia Tigers

Tuesday, June 30, 2020 – 5:30am EST

Probable Pitchers Per MyKBO Website:

  • Hanwha: Jang Shi-hwan (1-4 6.21 ERA)
  • Kia: Im Ki-Young (4-3 2.91 ERA)

The Hanwha Eagles won two games during the middle of the week but then dropped their two weekend games against the KT Wiz to prove that they’re still the worst team in the league.

Hanwha will send out Jang Shi-hwan who is 1-4 with a 6.21 ERA on the season. Shi-hwan hasn’t recorded a win since opening day and has had seven starts since then with four losses in those seven starts.

Shi-hwan hasn’t been able to pitch past the 5th inning in his last six games on the season but has looked better as of late

In his last two starts against LG and Samsung, Shi-hwan has 12 strikeouts, four walks, and allowed just three runs on 12 hits. The 12 hits in 10 innings are still concerning.

Again, this is Shi-hwan’s first season with Hanwha after pitching for the Lotte Giants from 2017 to 2019. Shi-hwan is striking out 11 batters per nine innings but is also allowing six walks per nine innings and 1.2 home runs per nine innings with a batting average of balls in play at .436.

While his ERA is 6.21, his FIP is 5.18. That number is still poor but much better than his ERA, of course.

Kbo Betting Picks Rotoballer

For Kia, Im Ki-Young will take the mound for his 9th start of the season. He’s been very impressive this season with a 2.91 ERA. He’s striking out a career-best 8.1 batters per nine innings and is walking 1.5 batters per nine innings. His FIP is just 3.13 which is just as good as the import ace pitchers we talk about.

Kbo predictions today

Ki-Young is 3-0 in his last four games started and is coming off back-to-back victories against SK and Samsung. Ki-Young defeated Lotte, SK and Samsung has his three wins in his last four starts. These teams are poor hitting teams as is Hanwha.

Kbo Odds And Betting Picks

Ki-Young has allowed nine runs in his last six starts. He’s been able to limit walks extremely efficiently and has three quality starts this season. Ki-Young hasn’t been going deep into games and has only surpassed 100 pitches in one game this season. In that game, he got the win through five innings against Lotte.

There’s really no batter pitcher in the back-end of rotations that’s better than Ki-Young as this point.

Prediction

I like Im Ki-Young to shut down the Hanwha offense. Kia struggled scoring runs against Kiwoom but should explode against Hanwha, who does not have the same dominant pitching.

Lotte Giants vs. NC Dinos

Tuesday, June 30, 2020 – 5:30am EST

Probable Pitchers Per MyKBO Website:

  • Lotte: Kim Dae-woo (0-1 4.60 ERA)
  • NC: Mike Wright (0-2 10.80 ERA)

The Lotte Giants will send out Kim Dae-woo to make his first career KBO start. Dae-woo was with the Lotte Giants from 2009 and 2010 as a pitcher. He then moved to a hitter from 2012-2017 with the Giants. He batted .212 with seven homes and 42 RBI’s in 325 at bats.

Kbo Betting Picks

He then went back into relief in 2018 for five games. Dae-woo disappeared in 2019. Now he’s started 2020 coming out of the bullpen and will now make his first start of the season after 14 games in relief.

If you take his career KBO numbers with the Giants, he’s got a 9.53 ERA and a 2.05 FIP. He’s 0-4 in 23 games through his career and has more walks than strikeouts throughout his career as well.

So far this season, he’s thrown just 15.2 innings in 14 games this season. He’s striking out 6.3 batters per nine innings and walking 5.7 batters per nine innings. He’s got an ERA of 4.6 but an FIP lower at 4.10. However, again, how will he fare going multiple innings. Will he regress and tire out? Probably.

Dae-woo has thrown seven consecutive scoreless relief appearances but hasn’t faced the Dinos yet this season. The farthest he’s gone this season is two innings against KT. He allowed two hits on 22 pitches in those two innings.

The Dinos will pitch Mike Wright, who has had a lot more success throwing the baseball. Wright, a former big-leaguer, is starting his 10th game of the season and has an ERA of 3.60 with an FIP of 4.87.

Wright has struggled with his command at times walking 4.1 batters per nine innings. However, he’s struck out 7.4 batters per nine innings this season. Wright has also allowed a homer per nine innings.

Wright hasn’t faced Lotte this season but is coming off a solid outing against the KT Wiz after allowing one run on five hits. However again, he walked four and hit a batter, giving five free passes in that game. Wright has been on and off all season but is 2-0 in three starts at home this season.

NC is home against Lotte and Lotte is a much better home team than road team.

Prediction

Mike Wright has been a bit streaky this season. His command has been off a little bit but his FIP has dipped throughout the season. For our KBO Picks, I expect Wright to perform in this match-up. The NC Dinos should put plenty on the board for him to work with.

Kbo Betting Picks

That pretty much sums it up when it comes to the Korean Baseball Organization.

I’ve spent the last two weeks researching the KBO. The league’s opening day is Tuesday, May 5, and marks the return of professional baseball for bettors and fans. The games, played in South Korea, will be broadcast live on ESPN (although they generally start between 1 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. EST).

There are 10 teams in the league, and they play a 144-game season, with each team facing off 16 times. Rather than being named after the cities or areas in which they play, the teams are named for the corporations that sponsor them. It would be as if Major League Baseball had the Delta Braves and Budweiser Cardinals rather than Atlanta and St. Louis, respectively.

I’m very much a macro-handicapper. With few exceptions, I don’t get too bogged down with individual matchups in any sport. Instead, I like to approach the group as a whole. So I’m not going to pretend that I can wax poetic about 2019 KBO batting champion Eui Ji Yang’s approach at the plate.

However, I do feel like I have a good grasp on who these teams are entering the season and which way most of them are trending. Here is a quick breakdown, and some predictions, to get you primed for the season, with the teams listed in the order in which they finished last season:

Picks

Doosan Bears – The back-to-back defending champions have won three titles since 2016, and they are clearly the best team in the league. Doosan did lose league MVP Josh Lindblom to the Milwaukee Brewers, though. But their foreign-born hitter, Jose Fernandez, is one of the best in the game.

SK Wyverns – Utilizing the best pitching staff in the league, SK Wyverns suffered a massive collapse late last season. They had a seven-game lead for the regular season title – which rewards the winner with a bye to the Korean Series – heading into the final month. Then the wheels came off, and they ended up losing a tiebreaker to Doosan for the top spot. They also lost their top two starters (Kwang Hyun Kim and Angel Sanchez) and are a shaky bunch heading into the year.

Kiwoom Heroes – The youngest team in the KBO last year led the league in runs scored (5.4 per game). They also had the No. 3 pitching staff and could be primed for a step forward this year even without league RBI leader Jerry Sands. The Heroes play a more “American style” game, with less control coming from the coaching staff.

Kbo Betting Picks Today

LG Twins – This team is excited about the one-two punch of Americans Casey Kelly and Tyler Wilson leading pitching staff. However, both are currently under league-mandated quarantine since they traveled from the U.S. They will be available next week and are supposed to anchor a team that was not far off the pace last year with 79 wins.

NC Dinos – The Dinos have one of the best lineups in the league, leading the KBO in home runs and finishing second in batting average last season. The league saw a major dip in scoring last year after introducing new baseballs. However, the Dinos are still a dangerous all-or-nothing type offense.

KT Wiz – This is the newest team in the league, founded in just 2013. They haven’t been very good since joining the KBO, but they showed some signs of life last year, finishing in sixth place in 2019 after finishing ninth or worse the three previous seasons.

Kia Tigers – Historically, these guys are a bit like the New York Yankees of the KBO. They’ve won 11 championships in 37 years, most recently in 2017. But they finished in seventh place last year and are under the gun this season. The big storyline for this team is that former San Francisco Giant great (and Washington Nationals manager) Matt Williams is taking over as the third American manager in KBO history.

Samsung Lions – The Lions were a dynasty, winning four championships from 2011-2014. They nearly made it five straight titles when they lost in the Korea Series in 2015. However, this team has been in the toilet since then, finishing ninth, ninth, sixth and eighth.

Hanwha Eagles – These guys stink. They have finished in the bottom three in the league eight times in 11 years, including a ninth place finish in 2019. A miracle run to the playoffs in 2018 has been their only success in over a decade.

Kbo Betting Tips

Lotte Giants – The Giants are the most popular team in the league. However, they are coming off a train wreck of a season, finishing in last place despite having the league’s highest payroll. These guys have a ton of pressure on them this season and they brought in former MLB starters Dan Straily and Adrian Simpson to give them a boost this year. (Simpson is still in Seattle right now and will join the team when it is safe to travel.)
